Analysis of Results Eihab Taouk
ATTIRE LENGTH RESULTS
Jeans & Hoody Jumper 50 Metres 90 Seconds
Swimming Shorts 50 Metres 60 Seconds
Swimsuit 50 Metres 54 Seconds
Note: The same swimmer swam 50 Metres in every attire.
Our investigation on the experiment “the effect of swimming attire on the speed of swimmer” was performed at Roselands Aquatic Centre. I Eihab Taouk was the prime swimmer of this experiment and the above results were achieved.
There was no need for repeated experiments so there were no differences between repeated experiments because this experiment was not a trial an error based experiment nor was it a multiple number of swimmers. It was only one swimmer with 3 separate attires to be investigated.
From the table we can see that jeans & hoody jumper achieved the slowest swimming performance with 90 Seconds whilst, swimming with shorts finishing with a speed of 60 seconds.Leaving us with the ultimate attire (swimsuit ) which was the fastest effect on the swimmer with a stunning speed of 54 seconds.
The results can give us a sign that the attire has a direct effect on the swimmer because it can delay or increase the swimmers speed. For example; when the swimmer swam with the jeans & hoody jumper attire, it absorbed the water causing the clothing to be heavier due to wetness .For this reason this slowed down the swimmers speed as the material is made out of cotton.
As for the swimming shorts the swimmer had a smoother swim compared to the jeans & hoody jumper but slower by 6 seconds compared to the swimsuit. Although the swimmer bares most of his skin, the shorts itself acted as floaties because air bubbles entered the polyester shorts causing the shorts to float slightly.
With a spectacular speed of 54 seconds, the swimsuit was the best attire on the speed of a swimmer and this was due to the make of the swimsuit. The swimsuit tucks your body and acts as a shield to water and air bubbles, so as the swimmer swims the swimsuit does not absorb water therefore achieving a faster speed.
My experiment and results can relate to everyday life because as we are familiar with Ian Thorpe who is a famous professional swimmer. Ian Thorpe prefers swimming with swimsuits because it gives him better perfomance and great results such as” IAN Thorpe's world record in the 400m freestyle 2:08.68”.Sydney Morning Herald, ‘Thorpe's world records, November 22, 2006.
Finally my research is important because it can help the researchers of the swimming association come up with ideas and products that can increase the performance and speed of a swimmer .This will create swimmers like Ian thorpe and others achieve world records.
